The Importance of the Jelly Bean

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to overlook the little things—those tiny moments that might seem like a way to pass the time but can leave a lasting impression on a child. I was reminded of this recently during a simple afternoon outing with my daughter.

We’re fortunate to live near a candy factory—specifically, a jelly bean factory that offers tours to show how everything is made. One afternoon, looking for something to do, my daughter and I decided to check it out. We hopped on the little trolley that shuttled visitors between the museum and the gift shop, wearing our paper hats and giggling the whole way.

When we got upstairs to start the tour, I was a bit disappointed to learn the machines weren’t running that day due to cleaning. I worried the experience wouldn’t be as exciting without seeing the process in action. But my daughter didn’t seem to notice. She was too busy exploring—watching videos of workers loading sugar into tumblers, adding flavors and colors, and dashing from one interactive game to the next. She pointed at pictures on the walls with wide-eyed curiosity and kept a running commentary on what she was learning.

At the end of the tour, she picked out a lollipop and a drink, and we headed home. It was a nice day, but I couldn’t shake the worry that she hadn’t enjoyed it as much as I’d hoped, given that nothing was running.

Fast forward a week. We were driving down the freeway when she suddenly called out from the back seat: “Look! The Jelly Bean! We went there!” Not only did she remember, but she also talked about how much fun she’d had that day. Now, every time we pass the factory, she points it out with the same excitement, reliving that special moment we shared.

This experience reminded me of something important: you never know what will make a lasting memory for a child. What seems ordinary or imperfect to us can be magical to them.

So, take the time to taste the jelly beans, wear the paper hats, and ride the trolley. You might be surprised at the joy you find in those simple moments.
